A 28-year-old Richmond man was shot to death Thursday and police were seeking the alleged assailant.
Donald Middleton was taken to Reid Hospital after police found him in the basement of a home at 815 S. Eighth St. early Thursday morning, said Sgt. Brad Berner of the Richmond Police Department. Middleton was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was pronounced dead later Thursday.
Police have identified 34-year-old Ronald Allen Maish Jr., as the suspect. Maish remained at large Thursday night.
Berner said Maish called 911 for assistance and admitted to shooting Middleton. The 911 recording of that call was not released to the Palladium-Item because police said it was part of their investigation.
Police had to force entry upon arrival at the home where they found Middleton. They said Maish had fled the home, which belonged to his brother.
"Hopefully Ronnie will turn himself in and get this taken care of so we can find out what happened," Berner said Thursday. "There are two sides to every story. Regardless of what happens you listen to both sides."
Berner said Maish's family described the victim and alleged assailant as friends. Family members were unable to say what may have led to the shooting, police said.
Berner said that Maish had a record of run-ins with the law.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Tampa, Fla., is seeking Maish on past warrants that remain active.
In May, a warrant was issued for Maish for aggravated stalking and domestic violence, according to the sheriff's office.
Another warrant was issued in November for aggravated stalking and two counts of violating domestic violence injunctions.
Maish is described as a 5-foot-11-inch, 230-pound white male with brown hair and blue eyes. Authorities in Florida said he also goes by the alias of Ron Phillips.
